Mahlatse Mashaphu is a PhD Candidate within the Willows-Munro conservation genetics lab at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, she holds an MSc in Ecological Sciences from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Mahlatse is working on the conservation genetics of Oreochromis mossambicus across South Africa for future aquaculture applications. Mahlatse has a great interest in freshwater aquaculture, particularly in tilapia farming and impacts of hybridization in South Africa. She strongly believes that better management and conservation of wild tilapia genetic resources will contribute positively to the development and sustainable freshwater aquaculture production in South Africa. This will further, contribute positively to poverty alleviation through job creation and a sustainable economy in South Africa. Mahlatse’s expertise includes aquaculture production and systems, fish conservation and population genetics, fish biology and ecology, working closely with freshwater aquaculture stakeholders.
